Our Dehradun Favorites
Passing through Dehradun on your way to come rafting with us in Rishikesh? :) While many locals will tell you that Dehradun has only gone downhill since it became Uttarakhand’s state capital in 2000, there remain many gems in this city. Here we share here a few of our favorite cafes, groups, and green spaces — all of which somehow work to make Dehradun a better place. (Remember: supporting like-minded groups and organizations strengthens our community and ultimately brings change!)
Cafe Laata
@laatacafe
Start here. Run by the good folks behind Been There, Doon That (see below), this place has good snacks, treats, and vibes.
Grab a bhuransh (rhodedendron) virgin mojito and pick up a copy of "Walking with Laata" to discover 50 walking trails in the Doon Valley. Actually, this is really all you need for the rest of your time in Dehradun. You could spend the rest of your visit just walking these trails — exploring nature at nature’s pace.
Been There, Doon That
@btdt_official
We really admire the work of these good people, helping to promote slow tourism and the living and natural history of the Doon Valley. You can join one of their group walks or take one at your own pace, complete with QR codes that connect to maps (in the book above). Visit their website to learn more: https://www.beentheredoonthat.org/
Forest Research Institute
Needing some greenery and open space? Visit the beautiful campus of the Forest Research Institute. You can see the museum or just stroll the grounds. Check on the latest Covid rules before coming. Website: https://fridu.edu.in/
Mindrolling Monastery
Pronounced “Min-drolling Monastery” rather than “Mind-rolling Monastery”, this serene place is worth taking a walk around. Do check on the latest Covid rules before paying a visit. Website: https://www.mindrolling.org/
Studio Ayra
@studio.ayra
This ceramics studio offers one-of-a-kind, design-driven, non-toxic, absolutely gorgeous pieces, each made with love. Unfortunately for Dehradun, it appears that Studio Ayra will soon be shifting locations outside of Doon Valley. But you can still stay connected via the website: https://studioayra.com and social media.
Making a Difference by Being the Difference
@mad_bybtd
This Dehradun-based student activist group engages in litter pick ups, tree plantings, and more throughout the city. While we haven’t gotten involved with them directly — we have been following them on social meida and are secret admirers of their work. Making a Difference by Being the Difference cares and has been transforming their care into action for the past 10 years. Check out their mural near Ghanta Ghar and find our more about them on social media.
